Questions & Answers

Good questions,
honest answers

Whether you're a charity wondering if it's really free, or a creative thinking about joining the crew - here's everything you might want to know about OtterS.

For charities & fundraisers

Is it really free? What's the catch?
It's genuinely free - there's no catch and no hidden invoice later. We're a passion-driven, student-led collective, and our "payment" is the experience, the portfolio work, and the chance to support causes we believe in. We never ask charities for money.
If it's free, does that mean lower quality?
Quite the opposite. Because our reputation matters so much to us, we hold free work to a higher standard, not a lower one. Every film and photo is something we're proud to put our name on - we'd rather do fewer projects beautifully than rush work we don't believe in.
Are you a registered non-profit?
We're a student-led media collective currently in the process of registering as a non-profit organization. We operate with the same care, transparency, and accountability you'd expect from one.
What kinds of projects do you take on?
We focus on fundraiser-first social impact projects - events where raising funds, awareness, or support for a meaningful cause is the central reason the event exists. You can see the full breakdown on our Services page.
What do you need from us?
Not much: tell us about your cause and event, reach out early, give us the details and access we need on the day, and trust us with the creative freedom to tell your story well. No budget, no invoices.
How far in advance should we reach out?
The earlier the better - ideally a few weeks before your event. More notice means more time to plan a thoughtful concept and capture your story properly. That said, reach out even if your event is soon and we'll see what we can do.
Do you only work in Montréal?
We're based in Montréal and most of our work happens in and around the city. If you're a little further out, reach out anyway - we'll let you know honestly whether we can make it work.
Who owns the final photos and videos?
You're free to use and share the media we create together to promote your cause. We may also feature the work in our own portfolio and content. The full details are in our Terms of Service.

For students & creatives

Do I need experience to join?
No experience required. We care far more about passion, reliability, and a willingness to learn than a polished résumé. OtterS exists partly to give emerging creatives real experience - that's the whole point.
What roles can I apply for?
Filmmakers, video editors, photographers, brand marketers, graphic designers, and logistics coordinators - and if you're not sure where you fit, apply anyway. See all the open roles on the Join the Crew page.
Is this a paid position?
OtterS is a volunteer-based, student-led collective, so roles aren't paid. What you get instead is hands-on experience, real portfolio work, mentorship from peers, and the chance to make work that genuinely matters.
What's the time commitment?
It's flexible and project-based - we know you're a student first. You take on what fits your schedule. Some weeks are busier around a shoot; others are quiet. We'll always be upfront about what a project asks of you.
I'm still in school - can I still join?
Absolutely - most of us are. OtterS is built by and for students. Being in school isn't a barrier; it's exactly who we're here for.
What will I get out of it?
Real experience on real projects, portfolio-worthy work, a community of creative friends, and the satisfaction of using your craft to help meaningful causes be seen, heard, and supported.
